Taking classes
From ScribbleWiki: MD PhD Advice
This is subject to lots of disagreement - and every once awhile, the MSTP class will include an eager beaver who wants to take solid state physics I. However, classes don't really benefit you for several reasons:
- You have several thousands of hours of class via the medical school
- They will probably only tangentially relate to what you want to study / get your thesis in
- They suck a lot time in problem sets and / or exams, which you are beyond
- Grades matter for nothing. It's all pass / fail anyway
That being said, take only what is required. Any class you take is sort of a hobby - that is, like knitting or model trains. Fun, but of no direct purpose to your PhD. There is the occasional class that is really, really helpful, and this is much different for public health folks.
